Practice Directions on cases brought before the CJEU adopted in official journal

Date:
Sunday, February 9, 2014

The new Practice Directions are designed to enable the CJEU to ‘deal with cases with the greatest efficiency’ and to afford parties a better understanding of the CJEU’s 2012 Rules of Procedure and the conduct of proceedings before the Court.

Special emphasis is given to explaining the constraints on the Court, ‘particularly those associated with the processing and translation of procedural documents or the simultaneous interpretation of the observations submitted in the course of a hearing’. The need for these Practice Directions has arisen from ‘the constant increase in the number of cases brought before the Court’ and ‘the growing complexity of their subject-matter’.

The Practice Directions cover general matters, including stages in the procedure, costs and anonymity, and provide specific guidance on the written and oral parts of CJEU proceedings.
